Sciatica Pain Treatment

Help for Barrie Sciatica Sufferers

Sciatica or sciatic nerve pain is typically lower back or pelvic pain causing pain into one or both legs which often travels all the way down into the foot and even into the toes. It is caused by misalignment of the lower spine and/or pelvis causing inflammation and choking pressure on the sciatic nerve (major nerve bundle to the legs – about the size of your own thumb!), or its origins in the spine. The result is not only pain in the area where the problem happens, but pain or numbness through to the area controlled by the sciatic nerve. Very similar and often related but should not be confused with sciatica is pain referring from a damaged sacro-iliac joint, which typically refers into the buttocks, groin and sometimes down as far as the knee.

What causes sciatica?

Spinal misalignments (called subluxations) can cause choking pressure to the spinal cord and spinal nerve roots of the sciatic nerve leading to short term pain, and they cause a 6-10 times increase in the rate of spinal damage in the affected area. This leads to injuries to the discs and facet joints of the spine potentially and often causing serious choking of the nerves to the legs. These injuries are referred to by many names including disc herniations, degenerative disc disease or degenerative joint disease, arthritis, spinal stenosis, among others.

How does chiropractic help correct sciatica?

The chiropractic adjustment corrects spinal misalignments allowing the spine to function and heal optimally, and better yet it prevents spinal injuries (as listed above) so they never happen. Most importantly, well adjusted, well functioning spines protect the spinal cord allowing the brain to communicate to the body perfectly so you can be healthy and strong the way you were created to be. A well functioning, healthy spine means no pressure on the sciatic nerve, and therefore no sciatica!

What causes misalignments to the spine?

How the spine becomes misaligned can be categorized in a few ways. The first and most obvious is physical TRAUMAS. Slips, falls, twists and bumps coming from car accidents, sports injuries, heavy labor work, falls on ice and going back a little further for most people, learning for ride a bike, falling out of trees, wrestling with siblings and many more! Physical traumas can also come from the challenging posture of working in a chair all day, especially in front of a computer screen and add to that the rapidly increasing use of cell phones and the bent posture that is associated with it.

Spinal misalignments can also come from TOXINS. Our world is currently full of toxins, that are around us and in us. BPA for example is a powerful estrogen mimicker and at first glance may not seem notable, but for males adding powerful fake estrogen to our bodies, significantly suppressing testosterone and decreasing the bodies ability to heal from work, poor postures, and all the other daily challenges. If you think you are safe because your water bottle is marked “BPA free”, unfortunately your not. Plastic lines and covers most of the food we eat, meats, tetra packs and cartons, canned goods all the way from soups to beer cans are all lined with BPA plastic. And, this is just one example of the toxins we are exposed to!

The last and most impactful cause of misalignments to the spine is THOUGHTS. Our thoughts control and dictate our bodies ability to heal and restore itself. Another way to describe it is mental/emotional stress. Our bodies are designed to be in a state of “Rest and Digest (and heal)” more than 80% of the time, but conservative estimates show that we are capped out at under 20% of the time. Where do we spend most of our time? In a sympathetic nervous system dominant state characterized as “Fight or Flight”. Fight or flight is excellent when circumstances dictate it, but when you are in this state your body does absolutely no healing, meaning injuries to the discs and joints happening to the spine through various types of physical traumas through the day don’t have the opportunity to heal before they meet more traumas the next day!
